Peru is an incredible country and widely known as the jewel of South America. This is an amazing opportunity to explore a wonderfully diverse country and our itinerary will take us from the buzz of Peru's modern capital Lima to the relics of Machu Picchu. Not only that, but you will gain the prestigious Explorer Belt Award that forms a solid step towards the Queen Scout's Award.
I am leading an Explorer Belt expedition to Peru in July 2017. The expedition is scheduled to last two and a half weeks and the approximate dates we are working with are July 1-19. These dates should fit with the vast majority of university summer holidays. All expedition members must be over 18 as this is an independent led expedition.
We currently have a team of 4, including myself, all aged 18-20, but we are looking for up to 3 more team members to increase the size of our group to a maximum of 7.
Accommodation for the trip will be based in home hospitality for much of the trip. In addition, a good level of fitness will be required as we will be spending time at height (Cusco is 3400 metres above sea level).
A rough itinerary of the trip is as follows:
Sat July 1 - Sun July 2 Fly to Lima
Sun July 2 - Wed July 5 Lima . Project in inner city Lima.
Thurs July 6 - Sat July 8 Nazca Lines
Sun July 9 - Sat July 15 Cusco, Sacred Valley, Minor trek, Machu Picchu, major project
Sun July 16 - Wed July 19 R&R return to Lima . Fly home.
I first visited Peru in 2014 as an Explorer Scout when I represented WOSM at the UN Climate Conference (COP) that year. I had a great two weeks there but my time was spent mainly within the city limits of Lima and missed the opportunity to explore the beautiful country that it is so I have been pining to go back. I know the Chief Scout of Peru and she is already playing a significant aid with our planning especially with accommodation.
We are still yet to decide on the minor projects. However, our main project will be crowd funding the installation of 10 large solar panels on 10 Scout Huts in rural areas of Peru. This is an internal initiative by Scouts Del Peru called Scouts Go Solar that we will be supporting. Our goal is to raise $1000.00 USD. Participants will be asked to contribute to this by fundraising.
The expedition is a UK Scout Network Project. The four of us already on the team are currently at the mid stages of planning. A lot of the itinerary is decided upon and a lot of the groundwork has been laid, nonetheless, this would be the perfect time to join us and we are fully open to any ideas you may have.
Cost £2000. Flights will be booked at the meeting in February. These are likely to cost up to £800 but hopefully significantly less. The rest will be due by the Easter meeting.
